This project was associated with the National Institutes of Health, Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) CHICAGO Trial. The project entailed understanding the process that occurs during a Community health worker (CHW) home visit. The project involved designing and developing communication-teaching tools for the CHW-led asthma education intervention, working towards improving the asthma outcome of children from low-income families.

As a member of a 3-person team, I participated in user-centered field interviews, a co-design session. In this context, I translated data/information from what we gathered through research and interviews into visual communications, and I created illustrations for some of the teaching tools that were part of the study. We also went on a home visit to observe and document the implementation of the designed communication tools.

Problem Statement

Design in-home communication materials for the CHICAGO Trial CHW-led asthma education intervention

After receiving the current communication documents that were being used to train the Community Health Workers (CHW's) and going through their training plan we began breaking down their material and linking it to their structure to understand the patterns and see how we could simplify it and make it easy for them to communicate and navigate.

We had a Co-design session with the CHW's to understand what they felt was the most important information that they needed as well as based on the current tools what they felt could help ease their job. Each one of us was responsible for facilitating a topic of their education process

Created an immersive experience to bridge the gap between the CHW's and the Stakeholders. We created infographics and posters of the entire journey right from choosing the CHW's, a video of them preparing for a training session and the environment surrounding them during their session to help them better understand things from their perspective as well.
